Men Of Wood And Foam tells the story of the birth of the surf boom, a golden decade when surfing was transformed from a cultish offshoot of lifesaving into a sport and culture with its own music, movies, fashions and heroes. Underpinning this transition was a small group of artisans who moved from backyard wooden surfboard production along Sydney's eastern beaches to a former market garden at Brookvale, close to the favoured wave spots of Dee Why Point and Fairy Bower, and far enough away from suburbia that they could experiment with blowing foam to make lighter and more responsive surfboards from plastics. The pioneers became known as ''The Brookvale Six''.
