A spectacular attempt to recreate one of the most stunning Tudor firework displays, especially designed for the Virgin Queen herself. Using the earliest English instruction manual for making fireworks from 1635, as well as other primary sources and DIY experiments, the team will apply their understanding of cutting edge pyrotechnic science in an attempt to build Tudor rockets, Catherine wheels and fire-breathing dragons that were used to entertain Elizabeth I at Kenilworth Castle, Warwickshire one of the first documented firework displays in England. Indeed, no-one has ever seen a Tudor firework explode until now...The danger and technical challenges will create a real sense of scale and event all the fireworks will be tried and tested at a special testing facility - think Top Gear for Fireworks! The detective work needed to decipher these Tudor pyrotechnic manuals and the engineering ingenuity to recreate them, will form the narrative spine of the film. It will culminate in a recreation of Elizabeth Is mind-blowing firework display at Kenilworth Castle. From this narrative spine, VTs will delve in to the granular detail of the complex chemistry and history of fireworks. Lucy will travel to Tuscany, Italy to discover the secret to making a 16th century Catherine wheel, and Zoe will fly to Korea the firework capital of the world - to go behind the scenes of one of the most high tech displays put on. We will also use innovative filming techniques to capture the fireworks in all their glory. In Korea we will film the firework display using drones to capture the fireworks exploding at never-before-seen angles and we will create the first 4K slow motion firework explosion, allowing us to see each stage of the combustion process in minute detail.
