This colourful series explores how the awesome wilderness of the North American continent shaped the story of the Wild West. Episode one explores the three great mountain ranges - the Appalachians, the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada - and how these challenged the westward push of the early pioneers. Episode two goes to the Great Plains, half a million square miles of flat, treeless grassland which was the setting for some of the Wild Wests most dramatic stories of Plains Indians, wagon trains, homesteaders and cattle drives. In episode 3, it is Americas five great deserts that proved to be the final frontier for the pioneers on their way to the West Coast.
