Fighters is an intriguing new look at Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), a sport so extreme that it has been banned in many countries, including France. Squaring up to each other in cages and accused of being barbaric and degrading, MMA has, however, become an undeniable worldwide success. This insightful film follows four French champions, examining the attraction of the sport and the realities of training and recovery. We witness these athletes working themselves to the bone for extremely modest glory and an unreliable income. The film also explores the fighters' personal motivations and contrasts their lives in the ring and at home. Why do these ordinary people put themselves through this extraordinary ordeal? Motivated by self-reflection, a desire for freedom, dignity or personal accomplishment, in that cage they confront fear and pain. A symbol of imprisonment, but to them, the cage represents an opportunity to break free.
